Percolation — A Mathematical Way of Knowing Epidemics

This is one half of a co-taught session. The partner deck (Lens 1 — generative mechanistic modeling with EpiSim, by Ira Winder) lives at complex-systems-lenses.

A percolation-theoretic view of epidemic spread on networks, following Newman (2002), Spread of epidemic disease on networks. The mathematical lens complements EpiSim's generative mechanistic lens: the question is the same — how does disease move through a structured population? — but the instruments, and what they reveal, differ.
